ABUJA — Floods have killed 245 people and displaced 214,997 others across Nigeria this year, according to figures from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as of 20 October.
The agency said 673,350 people in 134 local government areas across 28 states had been affected. Speaking through a director, Dr Godwin Topikor, NEMA's Director-General, Zubaida Umar, called for a review of the response, closer monitoring of health conditions in displaced communities and better protection for vulnerable groups.
NEMA convened the National Emergency Coordination Forum ahead of an expected El Niño in 2026 and 2027.
