Ibom Power Seeks Up to N12bn Bailout

UYO — Ibom Power, the 191-megawatt plant owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government, is seeking between N10 billion and N12 billion from the state to stay afloat, ThisDay has learnt. Company sources said the plant operated for only 34 to 38 days in the past year, and that its 140 workers are owed more than seven months' salary. Gas costs about N1.5 billion a month, but only 40 per cent of its invoices are paid. The plant's long-term gas supply deal ended in December 2023 and was replaced by an interruptible arrangement. Energy consultant Eyo Ekpo said the plant needs restructuring, not just cash.
