SEC Proposes N3bn Minimum Capital for Forex Brokers

LAGOS — The Securities and Exchange Commission has proposed minimum capital requirements for online forex and contracts-for-difference brokers. Under draft rules, brokers that take the other side of client trades would need N3 billion in paid-up capital, while brokers that pass trades to the market would need N2 billion and technology platform providers N5 billion. The rules would also apply to offshore brokers targeting Nigerians and require at least 30 per cent Nigerian ownership.
