LAMU — A land court in Malindi, Kenya, has temporarily halted construction of the planned 700,000 barrels per day refinery in Lamu County pending a hearing of a suit filed by local farmers. The refinery, to be built by the Dangote Group at an estimated cost of $15 to $16 billion, would also include a 1,000-megawatt power plant and supply Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Burundi and the DR Congo. Aliko Dangote told the BBC the project would create about 60,000 jobs at the peak of construction. Kenya's Energy Minister Opiyo Wandayi backed the project.
