Banks May Cut Loan and Deposit Rates After MPR Reduction

LAGOS — Nigerian banks may lower interest rates on loans and deposits after the Central Bank of Nigeria cut its Monetary Policy Rate from 26.5 per cent to 23 per cent on 22 September. Stanbic IBTC has informed customers that all loans and deposits linked to the policy rate will be repriced downwards from that date. Ayokunle Olubunmi of Agusto & Co told Daily Trust that loans priced at the policy rate plus a margin will fall automatically, but fixed-rate loans may not. He said competition for customers and fresh capital could push banks to lower rates further.
