Group Says 180 Textile Factories Have Shut in Nigeria

ABUJA — About 180 textile factories have closed in Nigeria, according to the Cotton, Textile and Garment Development Forum. In a statement marking World Cotton Day, its coordinator, Anibe Achimugu, said the country produces about 13,000 tonnes of cotton and imports around 90 per cent of its needs. He blamed the failure to make the Cotton, Textile and Garment Development Board operational, although the National Economic Council endorsed it in April 2025 and a steering committee was inaugurated in March 2026.
