Metering Lags as World Bank Power Scheme Deadline Nears

ABUJA — Only 22.8 per cent of the meters planned under the World Bank's $500 million Distribution Sector Recovery Programme have been installed, according to an analysis by ThisDay of the bank's latest report. A total of 731,034 meters have been installed against a target of 3.2 million by December 2027. Only $94.44 million, about 19 per cent of the loan, has been disbursed, and the closing date has been moved to May 2028. New connections stand at 804,137 against a target of 3.9 million, and 2,477 kilometres of power lines have been rehabilitated out of 15,000. The World Bank rates the programme moderately satisfactory with substantial risk, and a restructuring is under discussion.
