Customs Says Smuggling Drains Revenue and Hurts Local Manufacturers

IDIROKO — Smuggling is costing the government revenue and undercutting Nigerian manufacturers, the Nigeria Customs Service's Ogun I Command has said. Speaking for the acting controller, Abdulhamid Ibrahim, at a workshop for journalists, an officer said a carton of locally made spaghetti costs N5,000 while smuggled cartons are sold for N3,000. He called for stricter checks on import documents and duty payments, especially for vehicles brought in through Benin Republic. Bonny Botoku of the Nigeria-Benin Inter-Border Forum urged diplomacy and an end to the harassment of traders who follow the rules.
