ABUJA — Economists are calling for a full accounting of the 2025 and 2026 budgets before a new spending plan is approved for 2027. The Budget Office completed the draft 2027–2029 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework in July, and the 2027 budget is expected to be presented to the National Assembly in October. The IMF and the World Bank have raised concerns over overlapping budget years, weak cash releases and spending outside the budget. The Budget Office relies on sections 80 to 84 of the Constitution to extend budgets. Economist Adegboyega Adebajo told Daily Trust he supports preparing the 2027 budget but said an audited reconciliation of the previous two budgets should come first.
