JOS — The Plateau State House of Assembly on Tuesday approved the constitutional amendment bill to create state police, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill 2026.
Lawmakers adopted the report of an ad hoc committee chaired by Theodore Maiyaki, who represents Qua'an-Pan South, at a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Naanlong Daniel. Maiyaki said the reform would help address insecurity and the shortage of police personnel, and improve policing at community level.
The Assembly began considering the bill in September after the National Assembly transmitted it through Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Under Section 9(2) of the Constitution, an amendment requires the approval of at least two-thirds of state assemblies, or 24 of the 36.
At the same sitting, bills on patients' rights and on jungle justice and mob action passed first reading.
