FCT Classrooms Remain Empty as Teachers' Strike Enters Seventh Day

ABUJA — Classrooms in public schools across the Federal Capital Territory remained largely empty as the teachers' strike entered its seventh day. The FCT Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress declared the indefinite strike on October 7 over unmet demands, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has threatened to apply a no-work-no-pay policy. At Government Secondary School, Jabi, a teacher told Premium Times that teachers had gone four working days without teaching, while a student said pupils were told to go home. At the FCT School for the Blind, the headmistress said classes had stopped but boarding pupils could not be left alone. The NLC is demanding the removal of the vacancy requirement for promotion, a fresh examination for teachers due for promotion in 2025, and the withdrawal of redeployment letters to education directors.
