Forgotten Schoolchildren: Borno Families Still Waiting as Abductions Pass 140 Days

More than 2,000 students have been abducted in about 30 incidents since the kidnapping of 276 girls in Chibok in 2014. Among the latest are about 80 students taken in two attacks in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State in May and June 2026 who remain in captivity: pupils from Mussa, put at 44 by Governor Babagana Zulum, and 36 students and a teacher from Lassa. Parents told Premium Times they feel abandoned, pointing out that students abducted in Oriire, Oyo State, were rescued within about two months. One parent said he had been waiting about 143 days. A researcher at the Centre for Democracy and Development, Dengiyefa Angalapu, highlighted weaknesses in the Safe Schools Initiative.
