Catholic Diocese Shuts Schools and Hospital in Ihugh After Fourth Hostel Fire

IHUGH, BENUE — The Catholic Diocese of Gboko has shut all its institutions in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State, indefinitely following a fire at the hostel of St. Winifred Girls Secondary School on October 11. It was the fourth fire at the school since October 2025 and the third in four months. In a decree dated October 12, the Bishop of Gboko, Most Rev. William Avenya, ordered the closure of St. Winifred Girls Secondary School, St. Winifred Nursery and Primary School, St. Thomas Hospital, Salus Mind Care Centre, the hospital chaplaincy and St. Winifred Parish. All priests, teachers, medical and administrative staff were withdrawn, and students will be moved to other Catholic schools. Some parents told Daily Trust they want their children moved or the school relocated. The Benue State Police Command spokesman, DSP Peter Aondongu, said no lives were lost and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
