LAGOS — The Federal Ministry of Education is taking steps against schools that increase fees for the 2027 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination on their own, the new Head of the National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Suleiman Danlami Kum, has said. Kum, who took over from Dr Amos Dangut after Dangut became WAEC Registrar, spoke on Saturday while monitoring the 2026 WASSCE for Private Candidates, Second Series. He noted that WAEC had not yet opened entries for the May/June examination. More than 56,000 candidates registered for the ongoing examination nationwide, including about 272 walk-in candidates, with more than 22,000 writing in Lagos. Kum said computer-based testing, introduced in 2024, has come to stay and has helped reduce malpractice. He added that candidates are searched before entering examination halls, with men searched by men and women by women.
