FG Releases Salary Arrears to University Workers After SSANU Ultimatum

ABUJA — The Federal Government has released eight months of salary arrears to members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), less than 48 hours after the union issued a 14-day strike ultimatum. The arrears are due under the 2026 FGN-SSANU agreement, with effect from January 1, 2026. SSANU President Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim said members would soon receive payment alerts and thanked the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa. Branches were asked to work with university managements and report any shortfalls. The union said two months' salaries withheld during the 2022 strike and one year of arrears from the 25 and 35 per cent salary increases remain outstanding.
