ABU Raises Registration Fees for 2026/2027 Session, Students Protest

ZARIA — Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has raised registration charges for the 2026/2027 academic session to between N143,000 and N298,000, up from between N62,000 and N84,000. The Governing Council approved the increase at its 218th special meeting on September 29, following a Senate resolution. New 100-level students of Medicine and Surgery will pay N242,000, up from N82,000, while Law students will pay N182,000, Engineering N172,000 and Nursing N212,000. The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, rejected the increase, saying the student loan scheme is a loan and not a grant, and should not be a reason to keep raising fees. Students who spoke to Daily Trust also criticised the rise. When contacted, Bayero University Kano, the University of Abuja and the University of Benin said they had not raised their fees, while the University of Jos said it had received no communication from the NUC on fees.
