MAKURDI — The Benue State Education Quality Assurance and Examinations Board (BEQAEB) has sealed Orenda and Opal Schools for allegedly victimising pupils and breaching the state's textbook policy. The board's Executive Secretary, Dr Terna Francis, said parents complained that the schools forced them to buy prescribed textbooks from the schools, although state policy allows families to reuse books and buy from any bookshop. Pupils whose parents could not afford the school-sold books allegedly had their homework left unmarked, and books bought elsewhere were allegedly barred from classrooms. Francis said the proprietor and administrators failed to attend a meeting with the board, which then obtained a court order through the state Attorney-General. He alleged that the proprietor led staff in verbally assaulting officials and damaging a board vehicle when the order was served. The schools will remain sealed until they meet the board's conditions, and parents with similar complaints were asked to submit petitions.
