Oyo School Attacked in May Remains Closed as New Session Begins

ORIIRE, OYO — Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, one of the schools attacked in Oriire Local Government Area in May, remains closed as the new academic session begins across Oyo State. The Commissioner for Education, Olusegun Olayiwola, visited the area on Tuesday and directed officials to engage the Nigerian Baptist Convention on reopening the school. In the meantime, the children are receiving skills training. At Ahoro-Esiele Community Grammar School, the commissioner found there were no Mathematics teachers and directed that more staff be posted. Teachers paid by the PTA asked to be absorbed into the state's service. In the May 15 attack, 46 pupils and teachers were abducted; they were held for 56 days and rescued on July 10.
