Alausa Says FG Will Not Sell Unity Colleges After Inspecting Run-Down King's College

LAGOS — The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has insisted that the Federal Government will not sell any Federal Unity College, as controversy continues over the public-private partnership agreed with the King's College Old Boys Association. Alausa described an unannounced inspection of King's College, Lagos, at 7:30am, during which he said he found toilets, dormitories, the dining hall, laboratories and classrooms in a run-down state. He said he called the electricity distribution company to restore power to the senior school, and cancelled an arrangement under which about 200 outside vehicles were parked on the school grounds. The minister compared the standards he hoped to achieve with those of Eton, Ivy League institutions and Barewa College. The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, has also inspected unity colleges. Education unions remain opposed to the concession.
