King's College Crisis Deepens as Workers Reject Strike Suspension

ABUJA — The dispute over the concession of King's College, Lagos, deepened as the Joint Workers Council of Federal Unity Colleges rejected the Trade Union Congress's suspension of their strike and barricaded the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja. The council's chairman, Abraham Onuche, said workers had been seeking a meeting with the minister since July 6. They objected to plans to redeploy staff under the 35-year concession, arguing that a waiver already exists to recruit more than 3,000 PTA staff. In Lagos, parents blocked members of the King's College Old Boys Association from entering the school in the presence of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police. The old boys said the Federal Executive Council had approved management, not ownership, with no fee increases and staff salaries to be doubled. Their chairman, Femi Okunnu, SAN, said the school was not for sale. Schools remained shut in Uyo and Benin, while Federal Government College, Maiduguri, was ready to open.
