UNIPORT Lecturers Declare Indefinite Strike Over Salaries and Allowances

PORT HARCOURT — The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike. The decision was taken at an emergency congress on September 16 after a 48-hour ultimatum issued on September 11 expired. The lecturers are protesting incomplete payment of salaries for June to August 2026, incomplete responsibility allowances and non-payment of allowances to lecturers on the CONMESS and CONHESS salary scales. The union said its members had been left out of responsibility allowances paid to other unions for more than two years. The branch secretary, Tarila Amakoromo, said members will not teach, set examinations or attend meetings, and a monitoring team has been set up.
