Former ABU VC Recalls 1990s Crisis With ASUU

ILORIN — Prof. Daniel Iyorkegh Saror, who was Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, from 1991 to 1995, has recounted the crisis with the Academic Staff Union of Universities that led to his removal. Speaking on Trust TV's 'Reminiscences' programme, Saror said he first heard of an ASUU petition against him on the radio after a chieftaincy event in Gboko on December 31, 1994. He said the union wanted a role in running the university, which he refused. He claimed that a snake charmer was brought to his office in an attempt to force him to resign. The then Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, set up a panel headed by Maj-Gen Mamman Kontagora, which recommended his removal. Kontagora later became sole administrator of the university.
