FUOYE Staff and Students Stop Police From Arresting Vice-Chancellor

ADO-EKITI — Staff and students of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), on Wednesday prevented police officers from arresting the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, at his residence in Ado-Ekiti. Ogunwole said the officers arrived at about 6:10am claiming to have a warrant, but he refused to go with them until he was told the reason for the arrest. He linked the move to a petition reportedly written by people including his predecessor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, and a former Dean of Law, Dr Kehinde Adeola. The dispute arose from a leaked audio recording that led to the setting up of an investigative committee, and the matter is now before a court. The Vice-Chancellor said he had petitioned the Inspector-General of Police over threats to his life, and that his lawyers would inform the police that the case was in court. The university's Director of Public Affairs, Dr Sunday Saanu, described the police action as mischievous, noting that the VC had earlier honoured a police invitation. The FUOYE ASUU chairman, Dr Ojo Fagbuagun, said the union came out to oppose the intimidation of the Vice-Chancellor.
