Soldiers Disperse AAUA Students Protesting 68-Day Lecturers' Strike

AKUNGBA-AKOKO — Soldiers on Thursday reportedly fired gunshots and tear gas to disperse students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), who blocked roads to protest a prolonged strike by university workers. The students barricaded the university's main gate and highway links, saying the strike by ASUU and the Joint Action Committee of SSANU, NASU and NAAT had kept them at home for 68 days. Video clips obtained by Daily Trust showed armed soldiers chasing students, some of whom carried placards reading 'Enough is Enough'. The Students' Union President, Folagbade Greatness, said students continue to pay fees while their lecturers go unpaid, and vowed to continue protesting. The union's General Secretary, Tolulope Adeyefa, condemned the deployment of soldiers and urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to act. The unions are striking over unimplemented agreements, unpaid allowances and funding. The Army had not reacted at the time of reporting.
