ABUJA — The Federal Government plans to train one million serving teachers under the Accelerated Teacher Professional Programme. The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this when he received the new UNESCO Country Representative, Prof. Isaiah Barreto Da Rosa. Alausa said more than one million out-of-school children had returned to classrooms in the past 20 months, and put the remaining out-of-school population at between seven and eight million. He listed the ministry's six priorities as quality assurance, technical and vocational education, STEM, reintegration of out-of-school children, data and digitalisation, and girl-child education. The minister welcomed UNESCO's support but said the organisation would not dictate what Nigerian teachers are taught.
