Atiku Says ASUU Strike Threat Exposes Failure of Subsidy Savings Promise

ABUJA — Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said renewed strike threats by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) undermine the Federal Government's claim that savings from fuel subsidy removal would be used to fund education. In a statement issued by his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku asked where the money had gone. He pointed to unpaid lecturers' entitlements, unresolved agreements, poor infrastructure and limited admission spaces in universities. He also criticised the student loan scheme, saying it offers loans to families who have been impoverished by the government's own economic policies. Atiku noted that several state universities are also facing industrial disputes.
