ABUJA — Resumption at Federal Unity Colleges across the country was disrupted on Monday as staff unions protested the Federal Government's decision to concession King's College, Lagos, to the King's College Old Boys Association (KCOBA) for 35 years. A ministry letter dated September 4 said the concession had been concluded, with handover due within six months, after which the school would no longer be funded from the Federation Account. Union leaders said 112 of the 115 colleges obeyed a 'No Resumption' directive. Daily Trust reporters found students stranded at Federal Government Boys' Colleges in Garki and Apo, Abuja, schools locked in Akwa Ibom, four colleges shut in Benue and protest placards at Federal Government College, Kano. Parents' leaders, including Ayopo Somefun of the South-West Unity Colleges PTA, Peter Oluwaleye of the King's College PTA and Kelvin Okpefa of the FGGC Benin PTA, opposed the deal. Later in the day, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, met the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and KCOBA. Colleges were asked to resume and a seven-member committee was given one to two weeks to review the arrangement. TUC General Secretary Nuhu Toro suspended the action but reserved the right to resume it. KCOBA insisted the deal is a public-private partnership and not a sale of the school.
