NUC Board Chairman Calls for Harmony Between NUC and Professional Bodies on Accreditation

OSUN — The Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has called for a better working relationship between the commission and professional bodies that accredit university programmes. Delivering the 2026 convocation lecture of Osun State University, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos said universities face double oversight from the NUC and professional bodies. He listed areas of conflict, including control of the curriculum, the timing and cost of accreditation, conflicting standards, resistance to new universities and post-NYSC professional registration. Ogundipe urged universities to shift from a culture focused on accreditation visits to continuous quality assurance. He said the accreditation status of programmes should be disclosed at admission and kept up to date to protect students, and that professional accreditation should help institutions improve rather than mainly punish them. He proposed clearer legal boundaries, a permanent consultative framework, harmonised procedures and a shared data platform, and commended the Minister of Education's committee on accreditation.
