PAMO University Says Rivers Assembly Probe of N29bn Scholarship Is Politically Motivated

PORT HARCOURT — PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Port Harcourt, has described an investigation by the Rivers State House of Assembly into a state scholarship arrangement as politically motivated. In a public notice signed by its Registrar, Peter Akubuiroh, the university said it sent a representative to the Assembly's ad-hoc committee on September 16, but the committee refused to recognise the representative or accept documents. The university said it was seeking legal protection. It explained that, as a private institution, it receives no direct appropriation from the state, and that the government pays fees for state-sponsored students through the Ministry of Education. About 600 Rivers scholars are enrolled, and the university said it has kept them on campus for four months despite unpaid fees. The Assembly, at its 53rd sitting, issued a warrant for the arrest of the Vice-Chancellor, according to a statement by Martins Wachukwu, Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker. The committee, chaired by the Deputy Leader, Dumle Maol, alleges that the university received more than N29 billion, an amount it says does not match the number of students.
