Queen's College Principal Says Bullying Almost Eradicated, Calls for Safe Schools for Girls

LAGOS — The Principal of Queen's College, Lagos, Dr (Mrs) Oyindamola Obabori, says bullying and gang beatings have been almost eradicated at the school during her tenure. In an interview with ThisDay, Obabori, who became the 26th principal in September 2022 and is nearing retirement, said she chose teaching after studying at Obafemi Awolowo University, despite her father's wish that she become a doctor. She said her administration built a bakery, introduced a clock-in device that alerts parents when their children arrive at school, and added laundry services, while old girls donated solar power for classrooms. The school also introduced a weekly half-day of skills sessions, including coding, baking, photography, DJing and perfume making. Obabori said insecurity in schools drives girls out of education, and called for efforts to rebuild parents' trust and bring dropouts back to school. She said the school's results in external examinations have improved and that she has no regrets about her career choice.
