Scholars at UNILAG Conference Call for Interdisciplinary Research to Tackle Insecurity

LAGOS — Scholars at the second conference of the African Union of Social Sciences in Nigeria (AUSS-NG), hosted by the Institute for African and Diaspora Studies at the University of Lagos, have called for interdisciplinary research to address insecurity in the country. Delivering the keynote, Prof. Afe Adogame of Princeton Theological Seminary said no single academic discipline can explain Nigeria's insecurity, and urged researchers to carry out context-specific case studies, citing kidnapping as an example. Cyril Obi of the Social Science Research Council proposed a national body of fellows to promote peace research, which could later expand across Africa. Co-chair Dr Joyce Agofure of Ahmadu Bello University highlighted conflicts over resources, land and grazing. In its communique, signed by Prof. Victor Ogbonnaya Okorie of Obafemi Awolowo University, the conference called for citizenship to be rebuilt around inclusion, equality and social justice. It recommended recognising local and women-led peacebuilding and indigenous knowledge, and treating education as central to the reintegration of displaced children and women. A total of 25 papers were presented over the three days.
