Senate Warns of Falling TETFund Revenue During Oversight Visit to YABATECH

LAGOS — The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Senator Mohammed Dandutshe, has warned that the money available to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund this year may be significantly lower than last year. He raised the concern during an oversight visit to Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), where the committee reviewed TETFund projects from the 2023, 2024 and 2025 intervention cycles. He said the decline could affect infrastructure development in tertiary institutions. The Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, said the college, which turns 80 next year, has about 35,400 students and more than 2,000 staff on a small site, and is therefore building upwards. He said outdated buildings, some dating to the colonial era, are being demolished, and several years of TETFund grants are being combined to deliver bigger projects. Demand for admission far exceeds the college's JAMB quota, and a new campus is being developed. Senator Shuaibu Afolabi urged more digital and remote learning, partnerships with foreign institutions and funding from technology agencies.
