Ishk Tolaram Foundation Graduates Youths in Technical Trades, Calls for More TVET Investment

The Ishk Tolaram Foundation has called on government, businesses, schools and development partners to work together to build a technical and vocational education system that can reduce youth unemployment. The call was made at the graduation of young people trained under the foundation's programme, themed 'TVET in the Age of AI: Skills, Jobs, and Youth Livelihoods'. Trainees learned fashion, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, air conditioning and solar installation. Fifteen graduates who won the programme's pitch competition received business grants of between N100,000 and N1.5 million. The foundation's Nigeria Programme Director, Oje Ivagba, said more than 2,000 young people have been trained so far, over 70 per cent of whom are employed or self-employed, and that more than N20 million has been spent on tools for alumni. Senior Programme Manager Abiola Oyeneye said the six-month programme is a full scholarship made up of three months of training and three months of industrial attachment. Oluwajoba Oloba of the National Talent Export Programme noted that about 93 per cent of jobs in Nigeria are informal and urged workers to keep updating their skills.
