FG Orders Universities to Expel Students Found Involved in Kidnapping

ABUJA — The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has directed Vice-Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts to expel any student found, after investigation, to be involved in kidnapping or related crimes. He also asked institutions to strengthen internal intelligence and work more closely with the Department of State Services and other security agencies. Alausa gave the directive on Tuesday in Abuja when he received the Pro-Chancellor, Governing Council and management of the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State, led by the Pro-Chancellor, Lola Fibisola Akande. He repeated that the Federal Government would not negotiate with kidnappers or pay ransom. The minister said security projects such as perimeter fencing would be supported through the TETFund 2027 intervention, and that the Energising Education Programme, which provides solar power and battery storage to institutions, would be expanded. Akande said some students were suspected of involvement in kidnapping off campus, and listed hostels, power supply and insecurity as major challenges. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, asked for the Energising Education Programme to be extended to the university's second campus.
