KANO — The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill 2026 after its third reading. Under the bill, private schools must consult their Parents-Teachers Associations before raising fees, and any increase is capped at 10 per cent. Schools will also not be allowed to charge more than 10 per cent above the official registration fees for WAEC, NECO and NABTEB examinations. The bill reduces the statutory charges private schools pay to the board from 15 per cent to five per cent. It also requires that the board's Executive Secretary be a qualified or retired educationist who reached at least Grade Level 14 in the civil service. The bill now awaits the assent of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf before it becomes law.
