KANO — At 63, Furera Muhammad goes to an Islamic school in Rigafada, Kano State, alongside some of her grandchildren. She said girls of her generation were rarely sent to school, and that she might have become a teacher had she been given the chance. Furera said she hopes her story will encourage parents to send their daughters to school. She spoke at a community event organised by the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) with the Ford Foundation under the Grannies Network for Change (G-NEC) project. The event brought together 40 grandmothers to discuss girls' education and the prevention of gender-based violence, including verbal abuse. The G-NEC project works in selected communities in Kano and Jigawa states through grandmothers living in multigenerational households, who are seen as influential voices in family decisions.
