OWERRI — The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, has condemned the arrest of two officials of its Imo State University (IMSU) branch. The branch vice-chairman, Chinedu Egbuchu, and investment secretary, Nnamdi Chibo, were arrested by police on Tuesday. The IMSU branch had begun a total and indefinite strike on Monday over the state government's failure to honour agreements with the union. In a statement on Wednesday, the zonal coordinator, Dennis Aribodor, said the two officials were monitoring compliance with the strike at the Faculty of Media and Communication Studies, where examinations were taking place. He said the university's chief security officer took them to the campus security unit, where police were waiting. The two were held at the State CID for more than seven hours and released on a N1 million bond each, with instructions to report back on August 18. The union said the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement had not been implemented at IMSU or Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra, more than five months after implementation began elsewhere. It called on Governors Hope Uzodimma and Charles Soludo to implement the agreement, and said it would hold the IMSU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chukwumaeze Uchefula, responsible if any member or their family were harmed. At a press conference, the IMSU branch chairman, Stephen Oguji, demanded an explanation for the arrests and a return to negotiations.
