Insurgency Shuts 57 Primary Schools in Borno's Askira-Uba, About 80 Students Still in Captivity

ASKIRA-UBA, BORNO — Fifty-seven of the 113 primary schools in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State have been shut because of insurgent attacks, the council's education secretary, Fasuma Askira, told Premium Times. Thirty-seven schools were already closed before an attack on Mussa, and 20 more shut after it. On May 15, insurgents abducted children in Mussa. Premium Times says it holds a register of 40 names, while the Borno State Government puts the figure at about 44. On June 29, insurgents attacked Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, during NECO examinations. The newspaper says it verified that 36 students and one teacher are still being held. This puts the number of students still in captivity at about 80. As of August 31, the Mussa children had spent 108 days in captivity and the Lassa students 63 days. Junior secondary pupils from Mussa have been moved to a government boarding school in Uba, and vigilantes and soldiers have been deployed to Mussa and Lassa. Simon Waindu, whose daughter is among the Lassa captives, said no child had returned and families had heard nothing about any rescue efforts.
