KADUNA — The dispute between Kaduna State University and its lecturers has spilled into politics, with the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Isa Ashiru, trading words with the administration of Governor Uba Sani. In a statement by his spokesman, Abdulwaheed Olayinka-Adubi, Ashiru accused the government of a lukewarm attitude towards education. Responding on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, said Ashiru had his facts wrong. Maiyaki said education received 25 per cent of the state budget in 2024, 26.14 per cent in 2025 and 25 per cent of the N985.9 billion budget for 2026, about N246.5 billion. He said the number of out-of-school children in the state had fallen from over 550,000 to 187,719 in three years. The commissioner repeated the government's spending figures on KASU, including more than N800 million for staff welfare, N146 million for arrears, a monthly N50 million intervention, over N200 million in overheads and more than N300 million for accreditation. He again challenged the union to provide names and resignation dates of the 200 lecturers it says have left, noting that the Vice-Chancellor puts the number at barely 50.
