CALABAR — A total of 214 students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja challenging their removal from the Faculty of Law. The suit, filed on August 12, names the university, its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Offiong, the Registrar and President Bola Tinubu as defendants, and seeks N5 billion in damages. On August 5, the university moved 214 of its 435 second-year LL.B students back to the departments they were originally admitted into and locked their portals. The Vice-Chancellor said only 221 students were properly admitted into Law and that the others would not qualify for the Nigerian Law School. The university offered to refund their 2025/26 fees or give them free tuition for the 2026/27 session. In an affidavit, the second claimant, Ogana Lawrence Lukpata, said the students were admitted in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 sessions, paid their fees and passed examinations up to 200 or 300 level. He said the current Vice-Chancellor refused to sign JAMB regularisation documents processed under his predecessor, Prof. Florence Obi, forcing students to pay again. The students argue that they were not given notice or a hearing, and that the new administration cannot reverse approvals given by the previous one. Their legal team is led by Okpi Bernard.
