ABUJA — The Vice-Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja, Prof. Abiodun Adeniyi, has said he is under pressure from a constant stream of personal financial requests since taking office. In a post on Facebook on Thursday, Adeniyi gave examples of the demands, including a request to complete a house already built to lintel level, another to sponsor a birthday trip abroad, and a text message asking for N5 million. He linked the trend to unemployment, underemployment, weak social safety nets and poorly run public institutions. The professor suggested that the same kind of pressure may push political office holders towards corruption. Adeniyi took office as Vice-Chancellor of the private university on May 6 after serving as its registrar. Ahmad Mahmoud Lawi has since been appointed registrar.
