KADUNA — The Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says more than 200 professors and other lecturers have left the institution over poor pay and working conditions. The branch chairman, Dr Abubakar Abdullahi, said at a press conference on Monday that the departures were linked to the failure of the state government to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement, which took effect in January 2026. He said KASU lecturers are now among the lowest paid in Nigeria and that salary arrears since January were piling up. The union gave the government a two-week ultimatum to begin full implementation of the agreement or face a total and indefinite strike. The decision followed a branch congress on August 12 and a meeting of the union's National Executive Council at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9. Other demands include university autonomy, workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance, payment of the 25 and 35 per cent wage awards and remittance of pension deductions. The state government had not responded at the time of the briefing.
