EFCC Withdraws Cyberstalking Charges Against BUK Student After Family Appeal

ABUJA — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn charges against Maryam (Isah) Shehu, a final-year student of Bayero University Kano, and Abubakar (Shuraim) Abdulhamad. The two were arraigned on Thursday before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on charges of cyberstalking and spreading malicious information under the Cybercrimes Act 2015. The case related to an Instagram post made on June 21, 2026, alleging that EFCC officials assaulted one Ahmed Uthman on the orders of a zonal director, who was said to have collected N20 million. On Friday, the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, ordered that the charges be withdrawn following pleas and apologies from the student's father and appeals from members of the public. The commission's spokesman, Dele Oyewale, however warned that further attempts to damage the commission's image would not be tolerated.
