ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike at Plateau State University, Bokkos

JOS — The Plateau State University, Bokkos branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike after a 14-day ultimatum issued on August 11 expired without action from the state government. In a statement signed by the branch chairman, Comrade Vincent D. Choji, and secretary, Comrade Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, the union directed members to suspend all academic activities. The lecturers are demanding the start of the contributory pension scheme and full implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement, with arrears from January 1, 2026. They also want safe staff quarters, the construction of trenches around the university's perimeter fence, and an end to what they described as intimidation of union leaders. Another key demand is the payment of 22 months of arrears of the 25 and 35 per cent wage awards. The union said the strike had been approved by ASUU's National Executive Council. Students of the university are expected to remain at home until the dispute is resolved.
