KANO — The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has warned that the country's education system is collapsing under the weight of poor funding and neglect of teachers' welfare. The union's National Deputy President, Elder Comrade Kizito Kalu, gave the warning on Thursday in Kano at the launch of the GoPublicFund Education Campaign. He represented the NUT National President, Audu Titus Amba. Kalu said education funding in Nigeria remains below international benchmarks and that teachers continue to work under poor conditions. He linked the underfunding to falling standards in schools and to the growing number of out-of-school children. The campaign aims to put pressure on federal, state and local governments to increase their investment in public education. It will also focus on bringing out-of-school children back to the classroom through coordinated interventions involving government and other stakeholders. The union called on all tiers of government to treat education as a priority if the country is to reverse the decline.
