Kano Government Declares End to Decades-Long BUK and Rimin Zakara Land Dispute

KANO — The Kano State Government has announced the end of a land dispute between Bayero University Kano (BUK) and the communities of Rimin Zakara, Rijiyar Zaki and surrounding areas, which dates back to the 1980s. The Commissioner for Land, Abduljabbar Mohammed Umar, said the dispute had involved years of litigation, encroachment, illegal land sales by agents, and clashes that led to deaths and injuries. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf intervened after fresh clashes in early 2025 and set up a committee whose recommendations were approved by the State Executive Council. According to the commissioner, more than 6,000 claims have been processed. Plots have been allocated to affected persons under the Rimin Zakara/Rijiyar Zaki and Jajira/Garun-Iya schemes, while cash compensation is being processed. More than 85 per cent of the university's land has been preserved, and BUK has accepted the excision of part of its land as part of the settlement. The government stressed that the compensation does not legitimise the illegal sales that took place. It said that from August 31, 2026, BUK land is fully protected and anyone who encroaches on it again will face firm enforcement. A Kano High Court judgment delivered on August 18, 2026, upheld the acquisition and authorised clearance of the land once compensation has been paid.
