ABUJA — The Economic Community of West African States has launched a regional entrepreneurship programme designed to support young people and women across West Africa. The programme, known as the Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Programme, was officially launched on August 4, 2026, as part of wider efforts to strengthen economic participation and regional integration. The initiative is aimed at addressing some of the barriers that young entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses face when trying to establish and expand enterprises. Access to finance, business development support, markets, skills and regional networks remains a challenge for many small businesses across West Africa. ECOWAS said the new programme would contribute to creating greater opportunities for these groups while supporting the development of the regional private sector. The initiative comes as West African governments continue to seek ways of creating jobs for a rapidly growing young population. Youth unemployment and underemployment remain important economic and social concerns in several countries, while many young people work in informal activities with limited access to formal financing and business support. Women entrepreneurs also face challenges accessing capital, markets and business networks. By focusing on both groups, the ECOWAS programme is intended to support a broader base of entrepreneurs and strengthen their participation in economic activity. Regional programmes can also help businesses look beyond their domestic markets. ECOWAS has long promoted regional integration and the movement of goods and services among member states. Entrepreneurs who are able to access neighbouring markets can potentially increase their customer base and develop larger businesses. However, differences in regulations, infrastructure, customs procedures and access to finance can make cross-border trade difficult for smaller enterprises. Support programmes therefore have the potential to help entrepreneurs overcome some of these barriers. The launch also comes amid wider efforts by ECOWAS to strengthen regional economic cooperation following significant political changes within West Africa. The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the bloc has created new challenges for regional integration and cooperation, making programmes that strengthen economic links among remaining member states particularly significant. ECOWAS has continued to emphasise the importance of maintaining economic ties across the wider West African region. The entrepreneurship initiative is expected to involve cooperation among government institutions, private-sector organisations and other development stakeholders. Its effectiveness will depend on how programmes are implemented at national and local levels and whether intended beneficiaries can access the support available. Clear eligibility requirements, transparent selection processes and effective monitoring will be important to ensuring that assistance reaches genuine entrepreneurs. For young people, access to entrepreneurship support can provide an alternative pathway to employment and help turn business ideas into sustainable enterprises. For women, improved access to finance and markets can strengthen household incomes and increase their contribution to local and regional economies. Small and medium-sized enterprises also play an important role in job creation and domestic production across West Africa. The ECOWAS programme therefore has objectives that extend beyond individual businesses. If implemented effectively, it could contribute to stronger entrepreneurship ecosystems and greater economic participation among two groups that represent a large share of the region's population. The launch marks another step in ECOWAS's efforts to deepen regional economic cooperation and promote inclusive development. The focus will now shift to implementation and ensuring that entrepreneurs across member states can translate the programme's opportunities into sustainable businesses and jobs.
