ABUJA — The Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise by two weeks, moving the closing date from July 10 to July 24, 2026. The commission said the decision followed a review of the exercise and feedback from stakeholders including political parties, civil-society organisations and its state offices. Continuous Voter Registration is important because it allows eligible Nigerians who are not registered to obtain voter cards and participate in future elections. It also provides an opportunity for registered voters to update their information or transfer their registration where necessary. The extension gives additional time to citizens who may not have completed the process before the original deadline. Voter registration exercises can face practical challenges, including limited awareness, technical difficulties, travel distances and large numbers of applicants at registration centres. Extending the deadline can help reduce some of the pressure and give eligible citizens another opportunity to participate. Nigeria's 2027 general elections are expected to generate significant political activity, making the voters' register particularly important. Political parties are already organising structures and considering potential candidates. A credible register is necessary for confidence in the electoral process. INEC has continued to encourage eligible citizens to participate in registration activities and follow official procedures. Applicants generally need to provide the required information and complete biometric registration at designated centres. Citizens should also protect their personal information and avoid relying on unofficial intermediaries. The extension does not mean that registration requirements have changed. Rather, it provides additional time within the existing exercise. Political parties and civil-society organisations can use the extension to increase voter education. Young Nigerians, in particular, form a large part of the electorate and may need information about registration requirements and deadlines. Voter education is important because misunderstandings can discourage participation or lead to errors in the registration process. The commission also needs to maintain reliable systems for processing applications and resolving complaints. Registration data must be carefully managed because the voters' register contains important personal information. Accuracy is essential. Duplicate registrations and incorrect records can undermine confidence in elections. At the same time, eligible citizens should not be unnecessarily excluded because of administrative problems. The extension therefore creates an opportunity for INEC to improve access while continuing efforts to maintain the integrity of the register. Nigeria's electoral process depends not only on voting-day arrangements but also on the quality of preparation leading to elections. Registration, delimitation, party primaries, voter education and logistics all contribute to electoral credibility. The 2027 election cycle will require sustained attention to each of these areas. For citizens, the immediate priority is to use the additional period if they have not completed registration or need to update their information. Those who have already registered can also verify their details through the appropriate official channels. The extension provides a practical response to feedback received during the exercise. Its success will depend on how effectively INEC uses the additional period and how many eligible citizens are able to complete the process. A credible voters' register remains one of the foundations of a credible election. By extending registration to July 24, the commission has given eligible Nigerians more time to participate in the process and prepare for the next general elections.
