INEC Declares Oyebanji Winner of Ekiti Governorship Election

ADO-EKITI — The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji the winner of the state's governorship election after he secured the highest number of votes in the poll. The declaration followed the collation of results from the state's 16 local government areas. Oyebanji, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, won a second term after defeating his major challengers. The election attracted significant attention because of its importance to the political balance in the state and the wider preparations for Nigeria's 2027 general elections. Ekiti is one of Nigeria's smaller states but has historically been politically competitive, making governorship elections closely watched by the major parties. The result gives the APC another four years in control of the state. Oyebanji's campaign focused heavily on continuity and his administration's development record. Supporters argued that his first term had produced progress in infrastructure and other areas and should be followed by another term. Opposition candidates, however, raised concerns about the conduct of the election and the political environment. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Dare Bejide, rejected the result and alleged irregularities including vote buying and intimidation. Such allegations are common after closely contested elections, but they must be established through the appropriate legal and electoral processes. The Independent National Electoral Commission is responsible for conducting and declaring the election, while election petitions provide a legal mechanism for candidates who believe the process was compromised. The Ekiti election is therefore not necessarily the end of the political dispute. Candidates dissatisfied with the result can challenge it before the appropriate tribunal within the time permitted by law. The election also provides lessons for Nigeria's wider electoral system. The use of technology, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and electronic result processes, remains an important part of efforts to improve electoral transparency. Technical difficulties or concerns about result management can nevertheless affect public confidence. Political parties and civil society organisations have called for stronger safeguards against vote buying and other forms of electoral malpractice. Voter participation is also important. Citizens who vote help determine who governs their communities, while electoral observers can contribute to accountability by documenting the process. For Oyebanji, the victory gives his administration another opportunity to implement its development programme. A second term can provide greater continuity because the government does not need to prepare for another immediate governorship contest. The administration will nevertheless face expectations from voters who want improvements in employment, infrastructure, education, healthcare and the local economy. The opposition parties will now assess their performance and consider how to strengthen their organisations ahead of future elections. The outcome may also influence political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential and legislative elections. While state elections have their own local dynamics, the performance of political parties provides indications of their organisational strength. The Ekiti result therefore has significance beyond the state. The immediate priority, however, remains the transition into the new administration and the resolution of any legal challenges. Oyebanji's victory has given the APC another mandate in Ekiti, but the quality of governance during the next term will ultimately determine how voters assess the result.
