Sokoto Pushes Sanitation Measures Amid Calls for Stronger Action

SOKOTO — Calls for stronger action on sanitation and hygiene remained prominent in Sokoto as stakeholders continued to press for improved environmental conditions and better access to water and sanitation services. The concerns came amid efforts to strengthen sanitation practices across the state and encourage greater involvement by government institutions, communities and other stakeholders. Earlier in the year, civil society stakeholders in Sokoto had called on the state government to implement its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene policy, arguing that stronger implementation would improve water and sanitation services and contribute to better public health outcomes. The stakeholders also advocated greater community participation in addressing sanitation challenges and called for measures that would improve access to water points and toilet facilities in public places, markets, motor parks and schools. The renewed attention to sanitation reflected the importance of maintaining clean surroundings in a state where environmental conditions and access to basic services remained concerns for many communities. Stakeholders said sanitation could not be treated as the responsibility of government alone, stressing the need for residents, community organisations and other groups to participate actively in efforts to keep their surroundings clean. They also called for sustained public awareness to encourage responsible waste disposal and other practices capable of reducing environmental health risks. Government agencies and development organisations had continued to work on water and sanitation issues in the state, while advocacy groups sought stronger coordination and implementation of existing policies. Stakeholders maintained that improved sanitation required practical investment as well as effective enforcement and public participation. They said communities needed adequate facilities and reliable services to make proper sanitation practices easier to maintain. The issue also gained additional significance as public health authorities increasingly emphasised hygiene and preventive measures. Clean surroundings, access to water and proper handwashing facilities were regarded as important elements of efforts to protect communities from preventable diseases. Stakeholders therefore urged authorities to maintain attention on sanitation programmes and ensure that initiatives reached communities beyond the state capital. They also called for greater collaboration between government agencies, civil society organisations and residents in identifying local sanitation problems and developing practical solutions. The push for stronger sanitation measures underscored the continuing need for sustained action rather than occasional clean-up exercises. Stakeholders said consistent implementation of sanitation policies, improved public facilities and greater community participation would help create cleaner and healthier communities across Sokoto State. As discussions continued, residents and other stakeholders looked to the relevant authorities to translate sanitation commitments into visible improvements in the environment and public health.
